Advocate & Solicitor, Singapore
LL.B. Hons (NUS)

Lionel Chan is a Partner in the Firm's Dispute Resolution Practice Group. Lionel has significant experience in dispute resolution, and has been involved in complex, high-value, commercial litigation (both trial and appellate level) and arbitration. He has represented or advised clients in both domestic and transnational cases.

His matters span a wide range of industries and sections, including international trade, banking, company or shareholder disputes, employment, tort, and contract.

He regularly acts as counsel representing institutional and high-net worth clients before the Supreme Court of Singapore as well as arbitral tribunals in contentious matters.

Lionel's significant contentious matters include:

  • Successfully representing a UAE entity in an international aviation arbitration dispute involving issues of US export control laws and frustration of contract.

  • Acting in defending a leading commodities company in a Singapore High Court suit brought by its contractors for alleged breaches of contract.

  • Acting in successfully resisting a striking out application taken up by an international bank against a not-for-profit educational institution in the Singapore High Court. While the matter was struck out at first instance, the bank's application to strike out the claim on the basis of time-bar and the bank's reliance on its standard exclusion clauses was dismissed by the High Court judge on appeal.

  • Acting in successfully obtaining a Mareva injunction in the Singapore High Court against two ex-employees of a Russian-incorporated company as well as the BVI entities controlled by these ex-employees. The Russian company is one of the leading fertilizer companies in the world. The action relates to the Russian company's claim for corrupt commission payments made by its commercial counter-parties to the Singapore bank accounts of its ex-employees and the BVI entities controlled by them.

  • Successfully representing an Australian listed company at both trial and appellate level in a litigious dispute involving the unlawful termination of a business acquisition deal, as well as a subsequent spin-off suit involving alleged passing off, and infringement of copyright and trademarks. The claim, brought by the holding company of a large chain of childcare centres, was for S$50 million.

  • Acting in a white-collar criminal trial relating to charges for operating an illegal multi-level marketing and pyramid selling scheme pursuant to the Multi-Level Marketing and Pyramid Selling (Prohibition) Act.

  • Acting in a rare criminal reference before the Singapore Court of Appeal on behalf of the managing director of a company in a high profile white-collar criminal matter relating to charges of fraudulent trading under Section 340 of the Companies Act.

Lionel obtained his LL.B. (Hons) from the National University of Singapore in 2010 and was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 2011.
