International Arbitration Partner & Head of Korea Practice Julia Yu was invited to speak at a seminar co-organised by ASEAN-Japan Centre, Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). This seminar was held on 15 November 2019 at the Tokyo Prince Hotel in Japan.

Julia shared her in-depth knowledge on international dispute resolution (including international arbitration, international mediation and cross-border litigation) during the panel session titled “Effective Dispute Resolution with Parties from ASEAN Countries”. Joining her were esteemed panel members comprising Yoshimasa Furuta, Partner at Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, and Zachary Sharpe, Partner at Jones Day. The session was moderated by Yutaro Kawabata, Partner at Nishimura & Asahi.

Masataka Fujita, Secretary General of ASEAN-Japan Centre gave the opening remarks.

The seminar covered the following topics:

  • The benefits of arbitration for cross-border transactions and investments involving ASEAN parties
  • Mediation and Arb-Med-Arb in the context of ASEAN disputes
  • Enforcement of arbitral awards in ASEAN countries
  • Third-party funding of arbitrations involving ASEAN parties
  • Interim awards and emergency arbitrator decisions: potential uses and enforceability

The ASEAN Promotion Centre on Trade, Investment and Tourism (ASEAN-Japan Centre) is an inter-governmental organisation established by the ASEAN Member States and Japan in 1981. It has been promoting exports from the ASEAN Member States to Japan while revitalising investment, tourism as well as people-to-people exchanges between the ASEAN Member States and Japan through seminars, workshops, capacity building programs, research and policy analysis, cross-cultural events, publication and information services, among others.

The event was also supported by Japan International Dispute Resolution Center, Japan Association of Arbitrators, Japan In-House Lawyers Association, and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).
