Benchmark’s Analysis of the firm
Oon & Bazul is best known for its international arbitration, insolvency and commercial disputes practices. Managing Partner Bazul Ashhab heads the firm while Partner Meiyen Tan drives the insolvency practice. One case highlight saw the firm continue to act for the National Bank of Oman (NBO), one of the forefront Middle Eastern banks, in prosecuting a bank fraud claim in excess of $14 million.
In insolvency, the firm successfully represented the applicant PT MNC Investama TBK in obtaining a two-month extension of a moratorium under Section 211B of the Companies Act. This is the first reported decision where the question of whether a foreign company has the requisite standing to apply for a Section 211B moratorium was addressed.
The shipping team acted as lead counsel for Visa Resources in the defence of a claim brought by Chinese shipowners over a dispute on the unauthorised issuance of bills of lading and changing of discharge ports, which resulted in the arrest of the vessel in India.
